Cells in the sea

In appearance and behaviour these single celled eukaryotic organisms are the most diverse on the planet. Some exhibit features similar to animal cells while others are aligned closer to plants, with chloroplasts to facilitate photosynthesis. There are also some that posses both animal and plant cell characteristics.

The simplicity of these organisms is what tends to separate them from other eukaryotes, such as fungi, animals and plants. However since they appeared a billion years ago, it is from these simple sea dwelling organisms that all plant and animal would later evolve.
