A three-minute journey through 250 years of history.

This short animation outlines the story of how a single species changed the face of the Earth in as little as 250 years. That species was us.

Many scientists are now in agreement that we’ve entered a new geological epoch – the Anthropocene. Characterised by environmental changes driven by human activity the epoch commenced around the time of the first industrial revolution, in the late 18^th century.

The video has been produced for a new online initiative called 'Welcome to the Anthropocene' – a collaborative project being run by researchers and communicators that aims to improve our ‘collective understanding of the Earth system’. The online project combines high-level scientific data with visualisations to help communicate the global geological and environmental impacts of human behaviour over the last 250 years.
