6 Expert Signs That Your Air Conditioning Unit Needs a Service

October 29, 2024 by Anita Kantar

Air Conditioning Unit

Summer is in the air. Since Australia is predicted to have a few scorching months, it means your air conditioning unit is going to be working overtime to keep your home cool and comfortable.

It’s with this in mind that many Australians are opting for the air conditioning service Canberra locals use to keep their cooling systems working. Have you had your air con unit serviced this year? Do you know what the signs are that indicate a service may be needed?

Air Conditioning Maintenance is Crucial

Whether you have a split system or ducted air conditioning unit, it’s essential to keep it well maintained if you want it to work optimally. Faulty cooling systems will have to work harder to produce cold air and as a result, become more prone to breakdowns.

When this happens, you could be looking at costly repairs or total replacements. This post takes a look at the top signs you should look for to know when your air-con unit needs service.

1. Your Cooling System Hasn’t Been Serviced in a While

The frequency at which your air conditioning unit should be serviced will depend on the model you have. For the most part, experts recommend opting for yearly services to ensure that essential components are working optimally. If you haven’t had your air con serviced in at least the last two years, it’s time to schedule an appointment.

2. Strange Smells or Sounds Happen When the Unit is On

While it’s true that most cooling systems will make some noise while they’re on, there shouldn’t be loud banging noises coming from the unit. Strange noises such as rattling, buzzing, and grinding are all clear signs that there’s a faulty component in the cooling system.

In addition to strange noises, you should also look out for bad smells. Ideally, your cooling system shouldn’t give off any smells when in operation, so this is another sign that the unit may need a service. The smell could be something as basic as dust build-up microbial growth on the air filter or a burning smell resulting from a damaged part.

3. Fault Codes are Flashing on the Unit

Many modern appliances and gadgets are designed to display fault codes when something is wrong. Cooling systems are no different, no matter the brand or model you have. It’s essential to check your user’s manual or manufacturer’s guidelines for what these codes mean.

Typically, these codes are represented by a combination of letters such as UH, U0, and P4. In some instances, you should be able to clear these codes on your own. However, if these errors keep occurring, it may be a sign of a bigger problem.

4. The Unit is Leaking or Showing Signs of Dripping Water

Another clear indication that your cooling system may have a problem is water dripping or leaks coming from anywhere in the unit. In many cases, signs of moisture are just condensation from the fan coil unit.

However, you should establish the difference between this and more urgent signs of water pooling. This is usually a sign of refrigerant leaks or faulty components. If it is not dealt with urgently, this can spread to areas such as electrical components and evaporative coolers. Leaking water can also damage the inside of your roof, vents, or other areas of your property.

5. Hot Air is Blown Out Instead of Cold

Your air conditioning unit is designed to blow out cold air in the cooling setting and hot air in the heating mode. If the unit is consistently blowing out hot air, no matter what setting it’s in, it’s an indication of a bigger problem.

You can troubleshoot the problem by checking the temperature on your thermostat. Ensure that the unit is set to cooling mode. If these settings are in place and the unit is still only blowing out hot air, you should call a professional.

Other air-related issues could also be restricted or poor airflow. This means that although the unit is dispelling cool air, it’s at a much lower level than it should. While this often happens when filters aren’t cleaned or changed, it’s essential to have the problem assessed by your cooling agent.

6. The Unit Seems Less Effective Than Usual

Older units, may over time, start functioning less optimally than before. This is most evident when the air conditioner takes longer to turn on or struggles to lower humidity levels. Issues such as damaged parts, refrigerant problems, and blockages could also be to blame. Having a professional check the unit as soon as possible may save you from having to replace it altogether.

Final Thoughts

If you’re not sure how long it’s been since the air conditioning unit had a professional service, it may be time to contact your local agent to schedule an assessment. Having minor issues sorted out can prevent costly repairs down the line.

It will also ensure that your home doesn’t suffer any damage when the unit starts leaking. More importantly, you’ll be able to stay cool and comfortable this summer!
