X-rays reveal dance of electrons
With Dr Adam Kirrander
About this video
Dancing in the X-ray light
A snapshot of a moment frozen in time can reveal a surprising amount about movement. This animation from Design Science shows how Dr Adam Kirrander and his team at the University of Edinburgh are channelling the spirit of Eadweard Muybridge to reveal the hidden movements of electrons.
Techniques of X-ray crystallography have already revealed a whole world of complexity, and lead to numerous Nobel Prize-winning discoveries. Now Kirrander hopes to harness the power of x-rays to go deeper, and look more closely. Taking snapshots of changing patterns of electron movement can show precisely where electrons are within an atom.
Understanding the dance of the electron could one day revolutionise how we design and build new materials and develop new technologies.
