A multitude of living organisms adrift in the currents.

Plankton is a term used to describe a diverse and complex category of water dwelling organisms including animals, plants, bacteria and archaea. The vast quantity and array of life found at this level underpins the largest food web in the world. They also heavily support life above water, collectively taking in vast amounts of carbon dioxide and producing oxygen.

Although most of these organisms fall under the microscopic scale, it also includes larger organisms such as jellyfish.

Over the millions of years that these organisms have been around they have also formed the basis of our fossil fuels.
