Monsters in barrels.

Female phronima recycle parts of salps or jellies, building barrels to raise their progeny.

The squatter of the sea, the female phronima builds dwellings from parts of salps or jellies in order to raise their progeny.

The small, translucent crustaceans specialise in using their sharp claws to recycle the gelatinous parts of other organisims to build an increasingly large barrel-shaped residence.

Despite their ferocious appearance, the females take great care of their young, feeding them inside the barrels before they take their chances in the open water as a staple in the diets of many fish.
