A superconductor hovers above a magnetic track...

Your eyes aren't deceiving you, this little superconductor disc really is suspended in space. In this video from the Super Conductivity Group at Tel Aviv University a disc made from superconductive material is held above a permanent magnet.

The technique relies on the superconductor being very cold which locks the magnetic field in place (a phenomenon known as quantum trapping).

Another video from the Tel Aviv team went viral in October 2011 but we think this one provides a better explanation. Visit the Quantum Levitation website for more information on the physics behind the video.
