Unlike previous rovers the upcoming Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity) mission will not be looking directly for biochemical signs of life. Instead, it is attempting to ascertain whether Mars could ever have supported life and will look for past or present signs of water and carbon. The data collected will determine the past habitability of Mars and will inform future manned missions to the planet.
