Printing Dinosaurs

Digital Palaeontology

This video from The Verge explores how Palaeontologist, Dr. Lacovara of Drexel University, is using novel techniques to model and 'digitise' the ancient bones of prehistoric animals, such as the dinosaurs. Using portable laser scanning equipment, Lacovara is now recreating virtual three-dimensional models of dinosaur skeletons which can be studied by anyone without risk to the original fossil samples. Taking this one step further, he has also collaborated with others to make us of 3D printing technology, which can take the 3D models and print accurate small-scale replicas.

Making use of these technologies will not only provide scientists with greater access to rare fossil collections, but more importantly will facilitate the exchange of data. Palaeontologists in the field now have the means to scan their findings and instantly send 3D models electronically to anywhere in the world.

You can read more about Lacovara's work and the techniques he uses here.
