The symphony of the mind.

Throughout history the human brain has conjured up a vast repertoire of musical works. Scientists are now using the brain itself as an instrument by generating music directly from its electrical activity.

This documentary project, described as "part film, part science experiment", focuses on the sonification of fMRI brain data to explore the "music of thought process". Software is used to convert brain scan data into musical sounds designed to supplement and extend visual representations of brain activity.

New collaborations are being forged between scientists and musicians in the hope of uncovering novel ways to compose and produce music directly from the hemispheres of the brain.

The project aims to provide new dimensions in which to analyse brain data and, ultimately, to uncover an underlying musicality of the brain.
