Levitating Barbecue!
About this video
Electromagnetic Induction.
Derek Muller from Veritasium heads to Paris to showcase one of the most impressive science demonstrations we’ve seen on camera.
To help explain what’s going on, Derek visits the Ri to explore Michael Faraday’s original laboratory and the early experiments he conducted on electromagnetic induction.
He demonstrates Faraday’s law of induction by looking at his first electric transformer, made from two coils of copper wire insulated with cotton and wrapped around a soft iron ring (see image on the left).
What we see in Paris is the alternating current in the huge coil generating an alternating magnetic field which in turn induces a current in the plate above. This then produces its own magnetic field whcich is in opposition to that produced by the coils beneath – et voila! A levitating plate and a very impressive BBQ.
