Get your headphones out and experience first hand the century-old technology of binaural audio. Ryan Manning from The Verge demos the technology that taps into the subtle sensitivity of your hearing system to put you right in the middle of a scene.

Just as we use two eyes to see in 3D, our two ears give us a perception of the space around us. You know when a sound has come from your right or left, for example. Our ears interpret sounds according to three key factors: arrival time, loudness, and timbre. By judging the tiny variations in these factors, our ears can place the origin of a sound.

To properly simulate this natural experience in recorded sound, two microphones are placed adjacent to each other, just like human ears. They can even be positioned in ear-shaped housings to more accurately approximate the way sound reaches our ears. With the rise of virtual reality, could this technology, first imagined over a hundred years ago, be due a comeback?
